Liberty’s Adrian Bumbut went to the Chicago Fire as the 12th pick in the second round. In the third round, the New York Red Bulls chose Winthrop’s John Gilkerson as the seventh pick as teammate Saidi Isaac was the 13th pick in the round by the New England Revolution.

Dube ranked 14th in the NCAA in both points (2.21) and goals per game (0.65) and was named the Big South Conference Player of the Year.

Dube led the Big South during the regular season in points scored (27), while finishing second in goals (11) and third in assists (five). He was named the Big South Player of the Week a league-record four times this season and was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, Oct. 7. He tallied five game-winning goals on the year. Dube was also First Team All-Conference selection for the second year in a row.

Dube led Coastal to a perfect 6-0 record in the Big South this season, helping CCU became just the fifth team in the history of the Big South to finish with a perfect conference record. The Bulawayo, Zimbabwe native totaled 16 goals and 10 assists in two season with the Chanticleers after transferring from NAIA powerhouse Lindsey Wilson.

Dube led the Blue Raiders to the 2005 NAIA championship, while earning a spot on the NAIA All-Tournament Team.

The Revolution fell in the MLS Cup, 2-1, as CCU alum Joseph Ngwenya (2000-03) netted a goal in the 61st minute to help propel the Houston Dynamo to the title.

Bumbut was selected in the second round of the 2008 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft.

Bumbut becomes the fourth Flames soccer player drafted by a MLS team. The forward was taken in the second round by the Chicago Fire, joining former Liberty teammate Osei Telesford. He joins Telesford, Darryl Roberts and Hollis Donaldson as Liberty players drafted by MLS squads. All four players have been selected in the past three years.

"The Liberty Soccer family is excited about Adrian being drafted by the Chicago Fire,” stated Flames Head Coach Jeff Alder. “They are a first-class enterprise, and I feel they will provide a great environment for him to grow as a player. Adrian has worked extremely hard to develop as a player and a person during his time at Liberty, and I feel he is getting rewarded for his efforts and faithfulness.”

Bumbut helped lead Liberty to its first-ever Big South Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Men’s College Soccer Cup this past season. The forward completed his career ranked fourth on the Liberty all-time points list with 79 markers, while tying for fourth on the school’s all-time goals list with 32. The Zalau, Romania native garnered All-South Atlantic Region second team honors this fall, after finishing tied for second in the Big South Conference with 29 points on 12 goals and five assists. His goal total also tied him for second on the conference’s goal list. Bumbut led the Flames in scoring for the third-straight year.

The forward was named an All-Big South first-team member this season and also was selected to the VaSID All-State first team. Bumbut led the conference with five game-winning goals, as the Flames posted a 13-5-2 record.

Bumbut, who graduated from Liberty in December, reports to training camp with the Fire next week.

Gilkerson was selected by the New York Red Bulls in the third round (35th overall) and Isaac was selected by the New England Revolution in the third round also (41st overall).

“We are all very pleased for both Saidi and John to receive this opportunity to play in Major League Soccer (MLS),” said head coach Rich Posipanko. “They have certainly worked very hard over their careers at Winthrop and in the PDL during the past three summers. Gilkerson is the best athlete I’ve ever coached in my 29 years and Isaac is one of the top goal scorers I have had the opportunity to coach. Both have a tremendous work rate and professional attitude and are very good players technically.”

Gilkerson was one of four players taken by the Red Bulls on Thursday. New York selected Danleigh Borman from Rhode Island, Michael Palacio of Stony Brook and Laurent Manuel from Brown.

The Winchester, VA native is a three-time All-Big South conference performer and finished with three goals and four assists in his career as a defender. He was a big part in the Eagle defense that ranked among the nation’s best in 2006 and 2007 and helped Winthrop to the 2006 Big South Conference championship. In 2007 he was named to the NSCAA/adidas All-South Atlantic Region Team. During the summer of 2007 he played for the Virginia Beach Submariners of the PDL and was a two-time PDL Team of the Week selection. He was also named to the Eastern Conference All-Conference Team.

Isaac was one of four players taken by the Revolution. Fellow Big South Conference member Kheli Dube of Coastal Carolina, Chris Tierney from Virginia and Kyle Altman from Trinity (TX) were also drafted.

The Eldoret, Kenya native was the 2006 Big South Conference Player of the Year after scoring 17 goals and dishing out six assists for 40 points as he helped Winthrop to its second conference championship in five years. He was also named to NSCAA/adidas South Atlantic Region First Team. He was named to College Soccer and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the week for a four-goal performance in an 8-1 victory over conference foe Liberty. That performance also earned him National Player of the Week for Soccertimes.com. Isaac ranked 7th nationally in scoring and ninth in goals per game. As a senior, Isaac was named the Big South Conference Preseason Player of the Year, the College Soccer News Pre-Season All-America Team and named to the Herman Trophy Watch List. His production was down a little bit in as he continued to draw more and more attention each year from opposing defenses. Isaac scored 12 goals and had five assists for 29 points, which ranked second in the Big South. He finished 12th nationally in scing and goals per game. He was named to the All-Big South First Team for a third straight season, just the third player in school history to make First Team at least three times. He earned NSCAA/adidas All-South Atlantic Region Team again. He finished his career with 46 goals, which is the most scored by a Winthrop Eagle at the NCAA Division I level and tied for 7th all-time in the Big South. He also enjoyed a couple of nice seasons in the Premiere Development league with the Indiana Invaders. In 2007 he was named to the Central Conference All-Conference Team.

“With Marco Reda already playing in the MLS and both John and Saidi having the same opportunity, it is certainly an honor for Winthrop University and our soccer program to have players at the highest level. It is my understanding they will be leaving next week to join their respective teams for a short period of time, and then returning to finish their degree in May. We all wish them the best as they pursue their professional career.”

All MLS teams are eligible to begin preseason on field training on Jan. 26, but not all teams will report that day. The Revolutions starting date is Jan. 29, but the Red Bulls did not have their starting date posted.

Barry's Ozery Featured on Inaugural Cover of NCAA's Champion Magazine

Barry University soccer student-athlete Maya Ozery is featured on the inaugural issue of Champion magazine, which will be available at this week’s NCAA Convention and mailed to subscribers beginning Monday.

Champion magazine is the NCAA’s new printed communication piece – a quarterly magazine designed to showcase the good people who do great things to support intercollegiate athletics. Champion covers will feature student-athletes who not only represent the best of being a student and an athlete, but who also have accomplished extraordinary measures off the fields and courts.

Ozery is portrayed for her effort to alter the course of women’s sports in her native Israel after participating in a national league she felt was neglected. “I felt like there was no reason for the sport not to develop and be a part of the sports landscape in Israel,” she said.

Ozery rallied players to approach members of the Israeli parliament, lawyers and other organizations demanding equal opportunity for girls and women – not just in soccer, but in all sports. They also launched a media campaign, organized protests in front of parliament and distributed newsletters explaining their position. Those efforts led to the Israeli Supreme Court ruling that women’s sports in Israel should receive a percentage of any money awarded to sports programs in the country.

“This was not about us, but about girls who are going to start playing when they are 7 or 8,” she said. “My generation isn’t going to benefit from this fight, but it’s definitely for the future of women’s athletics.”

Appalachian State Hires Pendleton As Men’s Soccer Coach

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University has hired Shaun Pendleton, NCAA Division II’s all-time winningest men’s soccer coach, as the 10th men’s soccer head coach in school history, director of athletics Charlie Cobb announced on Wednesday.

The Sheffield, England native has compiled a 320-53-13 record in 19 seasons as a head coach, including two years at the University of Charleston (W. Va.) and the past 17 campaigns at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. His .846 career winning percentage ranked tops all-time among NCAA Division II coaches.

At Lynn, Pendleton compiled a 293-42-12 overall record and led the Fighting Knights to a pair of national championships — with a 22-0-2 record at the NAIA level in 1991, his first season at the helm, and at the NCAA D-II level in 2003, when Lynn capped an undefeated 22-0-1 season with a 2-1 victory over Chico State in the national title game.

Since Lynn joined the NCAA in 1996, Pendleton took the Knights to the postseason in 9-of-12 seasons and reached the national semifinals four times. Overall, he directed the Knights to the postseason play in 14 of his 17 years at the helm, where he put together a 38-12-1 record (.755).

Under his tutelage, 46 LU players earned all-America status and, perhaps even more impressively, 23 garnered all-America Scholar recognition.

As a player, Pendleton was a two-time all-America defender at the University of Akron in 1984 and ‘85. He also earned academic all-America plaudits in 1985 and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education from Akron that same year. He was inducted into UA’s athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

Following his collegiate playing career, Pendleton went on to play four seasons in the American Indoor Soccer Association with the Columbus Capitals and the Memphis Storm, where he set a league record by playing in 177-conscutive matches.

“We’re excited to bring in someone of Coach Pendleton’s caliber to lead our men’s soccer program,” Cobb said. “He built a championship-level program at Lynn and we look forward to him doing the same here at Appalachian.”

“It’s an honor to be the coach of a program with the winning tradition that Appalachian has,” Pendleton said. “I truly believe that the foundation is here to return the program to Southern Conference and national prominence. I look forward to getting to work to take the program to the next level.”

Pendleton, 46, holds a USSF “A” license and a NSCAA advanced national diploma. He and his wife, Jody, have a dog, Sheffield.

Savage and James Selected in MLS Drafts

The first GSC Players of the Week in of 2007 shared the spotlight for the first time in 2008 as West Florida forward Keith Savage and Montevallo goalkeeper Melford James Jr. were both selected in Major League Soccer's Super and Supplemental Drafts, respectively. Savage and James are the first players in Gulf South Conference history drafted in any MLS Draft.

Savage, a Gulf Breeze, Fla. native, was selected by Team Chivas USA with the team's only pick in last Friday's SuperDraft. The three-time All-GSC honoree was chosen with the first pick in the fourth round, 43rd overall. Located in Carson, California. Club Deportivo Chivas USA is the sister team of Club Deportivo Guadalajara, popularly known as 'Chivas', Mexico's most beloved soccer club. Chivas USA celebrated its inaugural season as an MLS expansion team in 2005 and finished the 2007 season with the top record in the Western Conference (15-7-8).

The club is led by one of the most distinguished and spectacular players in MLS history, Preki. Preki is one of the most spectacular attacking players in the league's 12-year history. During a 10-year MLS career with the Kansas City Wizards and Miami Fusion, Preki registered 79 goals and 112 assists, won the MLS Cup in 2000, was named the league's only two-time MVP (1997 and 2003) and was an eight-time All-Star. The Yugoslavia native, who later gained U.S. Citizenship, played for the U.S. National Team with Keith's father Bruce Savage and was named Head Coach of Chivas USA on January 17, 2007 and quickly nabbed the 2007 MLS Coach of the Year Award.

"Keith is a hardworking kid who can play up top and in midfield," Preki said. "We look forward to having him join us when we open camp in February."

"I recognized coach as soon as he told me who he was because he played with my dad," Savage said. "He told me he was excited to tell me they drafted me and to get in shape quick."

"I am thrilled for Keith," said UWF Head Coach Bill Elliott. "He has worked extremely hard every single day and is very deserving. Keith will represent West Florida very well."

James was chosen in Thursday's Supplemental Draft with the tenth pick in the fourth round, 54th overall, by the Chicago Fire. The Fire was one of two expansion clubs in 1998 and won the MLS Cup in its inaugural season. Chicago finished fourth in the Eastern Conference last season at 10-10-10, but made it to the Conference Semifinals before losing to the New England Revolution, 1-0.

Chicago assistant coach Daryl Shore joined the Fire as the team's first full-time goalkeeper coach in 2000 and played collegiate soccer against Montevallo Head Coach Ryan Pratt. Shore attended Birmingham-Southern College while Pratt was at Alabama-Birmingham and after contacting Shore about his goalkeeper last month; Pratt said the Fire became interested in the Brampton, Ontario, Canada native.

"Junior is a big reason for our success at UM and I always felt he could play at the next level," Pratt said. "It was just a matter of finding the right people for him to showcase his talents."

James got a call from the Fire's President and CEO John Guppy Thursday informing the net minder of the team's selection and to be ready to report to camp early next month.

"Obviously Junior can punt the ball to the moon and back," Pratt said of James' unbelievable drop-kicking ability. "That can draw the scouts attention but from there you have to do more than just distribute the ball and Junior is so quick for his size and his remarkable strength, quick hands and feet are some of the qualities pro coaches look for. He also has incredible command between the pipes with his communication skills and that is important in team sports."

SMU's Schellas Hyndman Earns Prestigious National Award

Schellas Hyndman

Jan. 23, 2008

BALTIMORE, Md. - SMU men's soccer coach Schellas Hyndman was named this year's recipient of the Mike Berticelli Excellence in Coaching Education Award at the recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention in Baltimore.

Hyndman, who has more victories (466) than any coach in any sport in SMU history, has been a long-time influential part of the NSCAA Academy staff. As a member of the Senior Academy staff, he has shaped the instruction of NSCAA candidates and has taught NSCAA courses throughout the nation, as well as in England and Brazil.

A former NSCAA President and NSCAA vice President for Education, Hyndman also is an NSCAA Director of Coaching Emeritus. The Mike Berticelli Award is named in memory of the late Notre Dame men's coach who was the NSCAA Vice President for Education when he passed away in 2000.

Hyndman was not the only SMU coach honored this year by the NSCAA, which also named SMU assistant Tim McClements the South Region Assistant coach of the Year, making him eligible for the National Assistant Coach of the Year award.

Sundhage Names 20-Player Roster for 2008 Algarve Cup

CHICAGO (February 20, 2008) – Following a 17-day training camp at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Pia Sundhage has named 20 players to the roster for the 2008 Algarve Cup, being held from March 5-12 in southern Portugal.

The U.S. team, which has been placed into Group B at the prestigious tournament, will open play on March 5 against China, face Italy on March 7 and finish the first round against Norway on March 10. The USA will play its first two matches in Faro at the Estadio Algarve, a beautiful 30,000-seat venue built for the 2004 European Championship. The U.S. women will face Norway in PortimĂŁo.

The USA will use this tournament as final preparation for 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying, which will be held April 2-13 in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. All three of Europe’s entrants in the 2008 Olympic Women’s Football Tournament will be competing at the 2008 Algarve Cup. In addition to Norway in the USA’s group, Olympic qualifiers Germany and Sweden are in Group A, along with Denmark and Finland. This year Group C features Portugal, Ireland, Iceland and first-time participant Poland.

“The Algarve Cup is a very important tournament for several reasons,” said Sundhage. “First, it is excellent preparation for the Olympic qualification, especially playing four difficult matches in eight days. That is a test of our fitness, our mental toughness and also our depth. But also, like we faced in the Four Nations Tournament in China, it gives the team a chance to play against three very good teams in the group who all play different styles, and that is fantastic for the development of our team rhythm, as well as for our young players getting experience at a big tournament.”

Besides the matches at the Estadio Algarve, all the games will be played at small venues spread out over the Algarve region on the southern coast of the country with the placement matches taking place on March 12. Fans can follow the USA’s intense schedule of four games in eight days online via ussoccer.com's MatchTracker and watch exclusive highlights on ussoccer.com’s all_access video.

Since the expansion from eight to 12 teams seven years ago, the Algarve Cup format has been as follows: The teams in Group A and B will compete for the title as the group winners will play in the championship game on Wednesday, March 12, in Vila Real de San Antonio, which is on Portugal’s eastern border with Spain. The two second-place finishers in Groups A and B will play for third place while the third-place finishers will play for fifth. The Group C teams will be competing for a chance to play for spots 7-12 as the winner of Group C will play the best fourth place team from Groups A or B for seventh place. The second place team in Group C will play the worst fourth place team from Groups A or B for ninth place and the third and fourth place finishers in Group C will play each other for 11th place.

This will be the 13th trip to the Algarve Cup for the U.S. women who from 2003-2005 won an unprecedented three straight championships at what has become one of the world’s most competitive women’s international events. At last year’s Algarve Cup, the USA defeated Denmark, 2-0, in the championship game on goals from Kristine Lilly and Carli Lloyd in the team’s fifth consecutive Algarve Cup final. The USA advanced to the championship game of the 2006 Algarve Cup but fell in penalty kicks to Germany.

While the USA will be without Kristine Lilly, its all-time leading scorer in Algarve Cup matches (13 goals), several players on the USA’s roster have seen some great success at the Algarve Cup. Last year, midfielder Carli Lloyd had a breakout tournament, scoring in all four matches to garner tournament MVP and top scorer honors. Forward Abby Wambach has scored nine goals in her tournament career, including a hat trick against Norway in the 2004 championship game. Midfielder Angela Hucles has scored three of her five career goals at the Algarve, all coming in 2004. Midfielder Shannon Boxx has twice been named MVP of the Algarve Cup (2004 and 2006).

Fifteen of the players on the roster were on the USA’s 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup Team, and all of these 15 have played in multiple Algarve Cups, including defenders Christie Rampone and Cat Whitehill, who will be playing in their eighth Algarve Cup. But Sundhage has also infused the roster with some young talent. Uncapped defender Rachel Buehler makes her first-ever tournament roster with the WNT after having played extensively with the U.S. U-21 Women’s National Team as well as in two FIFA U-19 world championships (Canada ’02 and Thailand ’04). Young forwards Amy Rodriguez, who made her debut at the Algarve Cup in 2005, and Lauren Cheney were named to the roster along with midfielder Angie Woznuk and flank defender Tobin Heath, who is the youngest player on the squad at 19. Cheney, Woznuk and Heath, all of whom played for the USA at the Four Nations Tournament in January, will be making their first trips to Portugal.

Goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart, who has just four caps, was named to the roster and has the chance to play in her second Algarve Cup after earning her first cap in goal for the USA at the 2005 Algarve Cup in a 1-0 win over France. Barnhart joins Hope Solo as one of the two goalkeepers on the roster. Defender Heather Mitts, who has not played for the USA since May of 2007 when she suffered a torn ACL, was not named as one of the 20 players on the Algarve Cup roster, but after participating in her first full training camp over the past two weeks, she will travel to Portugal as the 21st player to train with the team as her comeback nears completion.
